Campground Review: Canyons of Escalante RV Park

Canyons of Escalante RV Park is the only full hook up park in Escalante, UT. They get mixed reviews because the sites are pretty close together, but that is really the only the drawback to this park.

The park has 31 full hookup sites (30/50 amp), two are back ins, the rest are pull through. In our opinion, the two back in RV sites are the best, they are roomier (sites 30 & 31). Roads and sites are gravel and level. There are only a few picnic tables in the park. There are 5 cabins and about half a dozen tent sites. Amenities include restrooms/showers, laundry and wifi. We were grateful for the parks wifi because our Verizon signal was only 1X, just barely good enough to make phone calls. The park wifi would drop occasionally and would slow down during peak usage times, but all-in-all was decent.

Management is friendly, knows a lot about the area and are working hard to spruce the park up and make it a great place to stay.

We stayed one week at the Good Sam rate of $188. Early in the week we had no neighbors and plenty of space, but the park filled up on the weekend and parking was at a premium.

Good restaurants are a very short walk from the RV park. We enjoyed good food at Circle D and Escalante Outfitters, plus soft serve ice cream at Nemo's. Griffin Grocery, a few blocks away, is small but well stocked and had reasonable prices.

The RV park is right on highway 12, which happens to be a low volume highway and it was very quiet at night. Excellent access to hiking trails and the beauty of the Grand Staircase National Monument.

There are boondocking sites available off Hole in the Rock Road plus small rig/tent camping at Calf Creek Recreation Area and Escalante Petrified Forest State Park. Though the spaces are close, we now know which sites to request so we would stay here again because the location is so convenient to the things we want to do.

Site #8 during the quiet part of our stay.

By Saturday evening the park was pretty full!

Escalante Outfitters was so good we ate there twice.
Pizza, calzone and salad was delicious.

  1. Your pictures from Escalante in your last post are simply amazing. Gorgeous is all I can think of and it's not enough. Thanks for this honest appraisal of the RV park. Not sure the park matters with all this beauty around since I'd be gone all day every day anyway.

  3. We hope to return to that area...appreciate your honest review Lisa and will mark the back-in sites!

I do think Scenic Byway 12 is my favorite scenic rode of all time! We drove the while thing from Bryce when we went to Moab last year! It's just beautiful!

There are now two additional RV Parks in Escalante.1st: Grand Staircase Resort (Aka: Escalante Cabins & RV Park) (www.grandstaircaseresort.com 680 West Main Street, Escalante, UT 84726 435-826-4433. This campground has full hook-ups and large, easy pull-trough sites. It is only one year old and is a nice facility.

2nd; Shooting Star RV Resort www.shootingstar-rvresort.com 435-826-4440. About a mile out of town. Has full hook-ups and again with large pull-through sites, it also has about 10 Airstream trailers folks can rent for overnight stays.
